Singapore Art Awards 2005

eye

我们见证了它的成长, 也见证了朋友们的热诚;

Bob Lee – Eye City 2006

Witness of the Time

“Eye e City, we have witnessed Your growth,

the warmth and sincerity of Your friends;

You have witnessed the City’s renewal,

the evolution and resilience of Her culture.”

Eye é City is not a photography competition. Neither is it any usual year end countdown activity.

Eye é City does not have a team of full-time staff. Nor does it have an annual regular income for its operation.

To some, it may be just an activity that allows you to pick up your camera to take photographs faithfully during the last 24 hours of the year. In reality, Eye é City is not an easy 24 hours photographic activity.

As it progresses into its fifth year, even with relentless support from its faithful participants and supporters, Eye é City still has its share of bottlenecks and challenges at different stages. For one, we do see many familiar themes and subjects repeating itself every year during the selection process.

A day in the life of a lonely elderly. An unemployed taking an afternoon nap. A lazy kitten stretching its body. An old shop-house. Or a disappearing trade. Are these true reflections of the city or is it because most photographers prefer to take pictures with negative connotation? Or do these subjects or themes attract viewers’ attention more easily?

Of course, not all works take the form of the above-mentioned examples. For the past few years, Eye é City has collected a variety of images of happenings and changes that occurred in the year, thus becoming the nation’s photojournal.

SARS, Asian Tsunami, murder of Huang Na and Liu Hong Mei, NKF Saga, tearing down of Clifford Pier and National Stadium and many more others. These may not mean anything to some, but given another ten or twenty years, every images collected by Eye é City may become witness to the City’s renewal, her cultural evolution and resilience.

The process from planning, organizing, executing, selecting, publishing, sharing to exhibiting involves much commitment in terms of time, effort and passion. It will not be successful if not for a group of strong believers, supporters, participants and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Some participants may have joined the event out of curiosity and anticipation. Others joined because they have missed the fun of the last few years. Some may want to spend their last 24 hours of the year differently while others may take this as a rare opportunity to get together with a group of friends. And of course, there are those who simply feel restless and just can’t miss the fun after having participated for so many years.

Reasons aside, Eye e City 2006 has come to a close. Culminating in this publication is the collection of works that will go down in history as the way we shall remember our City today.

It is time again, to welcome Eye e City 2007.

“WHERE? WHEN? WHY??? A Portrait of Vasan Sitthiket”

“WHERE? WHEN? WHY??? A Portrait of Vasan Sitthiket”

The Substation Gallery
22 Nov – 2 Dec, 11am – 9pm
Free admission
Closing Event: Poetry Reading by Vasan Sitthiket, December 2,  7 – 9 pm

Installation work by Bangkok based artist Liliane Zumkeni. Enlarged polaroids depicting the front and back of tshirts belonging to Thai artist Vasan Sittihiket. On each of the 227 pictures are answers to the questions Where? When? Why? the shirt was worn for the first time.

The social self of Vasan Sittikhet has become an intriguing subject matter for Liliane Zumkemi to explore. A Bangkok based Swiss artist, Zumkemi works with Sittikhet’s t- shirts, which he has consistently produced simultaneously which national events according to domestic and international social political phenomena since the late 1980s. She has photographed his t-shirt series from the back and from the front, interviewed him, and wrote under the images in response to the questions, “where,” “when” and “why.” It has been an interesting collaboration and process because the t- shirts have transformed Sittikhet’s activities and ideas into object of interest for her.
